Tim Portland
Executive Chairman
Yellowstone Landscape Group
Tim is the Executive Chairman of Yellowstone Landscape, one of the nation’s premier commercial landscape services firms. Tim serves on the Board of the Seasonal Employment Alliance, an H-2B advocacy organization pursuing congressional reform of the H-2B program and the U.S. labor situation. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP) and chairs NALP’s H-2B Advisory Committee. Tim was previously CEO of Yellowstone Landscape, where, beginning in 2012, he led Yellowstone’s growth from a small regional provider to an industry leader with over $750 million in annual revenue, operating in 18 states. Yellowstone currently employs approximately 7,500 personnel in 80 branch locations, ranging from Massachusetts to Florida to California. Since 2013, Yellowstone has grown its U.S. workforce more than eightfold and complements its U.S. workforce with seasonal H-2B guest workers. Yellowstone started using the H-2B program in Houston, Texas, in 1995, and some of Yellowstone’s longest-serving H-2B personnel have been returning to work every year since 2001 (that’s 24 straight years for those who may be ‘math challenged’). The H-2B program is a strong and complementary component of Yellowstone’s labor strategy, in part because it eliminates the need for Yellowstone to lay off U.S. workers at the end of the growing season in the branches where it uses H-2B labor. Yellowstone has and continues to invest extraordinary efforts into recruiting, training, motivating, and retaining its U.S. workforce and strongly seeks to avoid laying off or terminating workers who have consistently performed through the heat and humidity of the landscape season. Tim was previously the CEO of USI Building Solutions—a construction services contractor—and was the president of several divisions of Scotts/Miracle-Gro, including the Ortho and Roundup brands, as well as Scotts Lawn Service.
